General Programme Information

Produce graduates who master language and linguistics, especially in field of German, capable and competitive in career, capable leading, critical thinking, skilled in information management, responsible towards society with ethical values ​​and having the ability to management. Students are awarded the Bachelor of German Language and Linguistics upon completion of 125 credits of studies.

Benefits

  1. Obtaining scholarships for further studies in Germany (from DAAD) or other European countries (from ERASMUS). DAAD also provides scholarships for Malaysians to attend summer courses in Germany,
  2. Exchange programme at the HTWG Konstanz (Germany) for the Bachelor in Business German and Tourism Management and other elective languages exchange programmes (Korean, Thai, etc).

Career Opportunity

  1. In the media, advertising and publishing industry (e.g. junior script-writers, editors, copywriters, proof-readers; writers, etc );
  2. In corporate communication;
  3. In the education industry (e.g. language teachers/instructors, teachers assistants, education administrators at government and private schools and institutions, research assistants, etc);
  4. As translators and interpreters (e.g. to translate subtitles, advertisements, texts, etc);
  5. As language or linguistic consultants (e.g. linguistic and language- related fieldwork, research assistants, analysing linguistic aspects of spoken and written texts at the basic level);
  6. As tour guides.
  7. In civil service.

Academic Structure

Entry Requirement

STPM (Current Year)

  • Pass STPM with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Obtain at least Grade C at the STPM level in any two (2) subjects; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level in the English Language subject; and 
  • Obtain at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

Matriculation / Foundation (Current Year)

  • Pass Matriculation / Foundation with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level in the English Language subject; and 
  • Obtain at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

Equivalent Qualifications

  • Possess a Diploma recognized by the Government of Malaysia and approved by the University Senate with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level in the English Language subject; and 
  • Obtain at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

OR

  • Pass Foundation at a Private Institution of Higher Learning (IPTS) / Open Channel Foundation at UM with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level or equivalent in the English Language subject; and 
  • Obtain at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

OR

  • Pass GCE A-Level with at least two (2) Grade Bs and one (1) Grade C in any three (3) subjects; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level or equivalent in the English Language subject; and 
  • Obtain at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

However, applicants who do not have MUET but have the following results may be considered for conditional admission, provided they meet the MUET requirement within one academic session:

  • Obtain at least Band 4.5 (Academic) in IELTS; or 
  • Obtain a minimum score of 53 (IBT) in TOEFL.

OR

  • Pass the recognized International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with a minimum score of 30 points; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level or equivalent in the English Language subject; and 
  • Obtain at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

However, applicants who do not have MUET but have the following results may be considered for conditional admission, provided they meet the MUET requirement within one academic session:

  • Obtain at least Band 4.5 (Academic) in IELTS; or 
  • Obtain a minimum score of 53 (IBT) in TOEFL.

OR

  • Pass STPM in the non-current year with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Obtain at least Grade C at the STPM level in any two (2) subjects; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level in the English Language subject; and 
  • Obtain at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

OR

  • Pass Matriculation / Foundation in the non-current year with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level in the English Language subject; and 
  • Obtain at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

OR

  • Possess an Australian Matriculation Programme (AUSMAT) qualification with a minimum score of 75 in the ATAR; and
  • Obtain at least 75 marks in any two (2) AUSMAT subjects; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level or equivalent in the English Language subject; and
  • Obtain at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

However, applicants who do not have MUET but have the following results may be considered for conditional admission, provided they meet the MUET requirement within one academic session:

  • Obtain at least Band 4.5 (Academic) in IELTS; or 
  • Obtain a minimum score of 53 (IBT) in TOEFL.

OR

  • Pass STAM not in the current year with at least a Jayyid Jiddan grade; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level in the English Language subject; and 
  • Obtain at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

Application for this programme should be submitted online through UPUOnline or Universiti Malaya's Open Channel (SATU). The decision is based on the initial screening requirements by UPU, Universiti Malaya's general entry requirements and specific programme requirements as stated on Study@UM website.

Intake Schedule

Our programme will only have one (1) intake per academic session which is in October.

Bachelor’s Degree Programmes (Malaysian)
