General Programme Information

Produce graduates who are successful in employment, knowledgeable and skilled in the field of Chinese language and linguistics, motivated and complete with research skills, the ability to lead and work in groups and possess nature of ethical and social responsibility. Students are awarded the Bachelor of Chinese Language and Linguistics upon completion of 124 credits of studies.

  • Business Consulting Companies, such as Banks, Telecommunications and Corporate Companies as Customer Ambassadors / Human Resource Officers / Marketing Officers / Information Officers (their language proficiency can help Chinese companies to globalize and foreign companies to localize in terms of making import/export sales).
  • Education field (as facilitators / trainers / language teachers / text book writers, social care workers at private or government schools /centre etc.)
  • Media line, such as newspaper, television, radio and internet (as news writers/ editorial assistants/ journalists/ translators/ copywriters/ web content editors in particular masss media communication.

Entry Requirement

STPM (Current Year)

  • Pass STPM with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Obtain at least Grade C at the STPM level in any (2) subjects; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level in one (1) of the following subjects : Chinese Language / Chinese Literature; and
  • Obtain at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3.0 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

Matriculation / Foundation (Current Year)

  • Pass Matriculation / Foundation with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and 
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level in one (1) of the following subjects: Chinese Language / Chinese Literature; and 
  • Obtain at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3.0 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

Equivalent Qualifications

  • Possesses a Diploma recognized by the Government of Malaysia and approved by the University Senate with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Obtained at least a Grade B at the SPM level in one (1) of the following subjects: Chinese Language / Chinese Literature; and 
  • Achieved at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3.0 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period at the application date.

OR

  • Passed Foundation from IPTS / Open Channel Foundation from UM with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Obtained at least a Grade B at the SPM level or its equivalent in one (1) of the following subjects: Chinese Language / Chinese Literature; and
  • Achieved at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3.0 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period at the application date.

OR

  • Passes GCE A-Level with at least two (2) Grade Bs and one (1) Grade C in any three (3) subjects; and 
  • Obtained at least a Grade B at the SPM level or its equivalent in one (1) of the following subjects: Chinese Language / Chinese Literature; and
  • Obtained at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3.0 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period at the application date.

However, applicants who do not have MUET but have the following results may be considered for conditional admission by meeting the MUET requirement within one academic session:

  • Obtained at least Band 4.5 (Academic) in IELTS; or 
  • Obtained at least a score of 53 (IBT) in TOEFL.

OR

  • Passed the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma recognized Malaysian Government with a minimum score of 30 points; and
  • Received at least a Grade B in SPM or its equivalent in one (1) of the following subjects: Chinese Language / Chinese Literature; and
  • Achieved at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3.0 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period at the application date.

However, applicants without MUET but with the following results may be considered for conditional admission, subject to fulfilling the MUET requirement within one academic session:

  • Achieved at least Band 4.5 (Academic) in IELTS; or
  • Achieved a minimum score of 53 in the TOEFL (IBT).

OR

  • Passed STPM in a non-current year with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Achieved at least Grade C in two (2) subjects at STPM level; and 
  • Achieved at least Grade B in SPM or its equivalent in one (1) of the following subjects: Chinese Language / Chinese Literature; and 
  • Achieved at least Band 3.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 3.0 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period at the application date.

Application for this programme should be submitted online through UPUOnline or Universiti Malaya's Open Channel (SATU). The decision is based on the initial screening requirements by UPU, Universiti Malaya's general entry requirements and specific programme requirements as stated on Study@UM website.

Intake Schedule

Our programme will only have one (1) intake per academic session which is in October.
