General Programme Information

Produce graduates who master language and linguistics, especially in the field of Arabic language, capable and competitive in career, responsible for society with ethical values, capable of leading, critical thinking, skilled in information management, as well as having the ability in entrepreneurial management. Students are awarded the Bachelor of Arabic Language and Linguistics, upon completion of a total of 126 credits of study.

Entry Requirement

STPM (Current Year)

  • Pass STPM with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Obtain at least a Grade B in Arabic at the STPM level; and 
  • Obtain at least Grade C in any one (1) subject other than the above at the STPM level; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level in one (1) of the following subjects:
  1. Arabic
  2. Higher Arabic
  3. Al-Lughah Al-Arabiah Al-Mu'asirah
  4. Arabic Heritage; and
  • Obtain at least Band 2.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 2 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

STAM (Current Year)

  • Obtain at least a Jayyid Jiddan grade in STAM; and
  • Obtain at least a Jayyid Jiddan level in the following subjects at STAM : 
  1. Nahu and Sarf
  2. Insya' and Mutala'ah
  3. Balaghah; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level in one (1) of the following subjects:
  1. Arabic
  2. Higher Arabic
  3. Al-Lughah Al-Arabiah Al-Mu'asirah
  4. Arabic Heritage; and
  • Obtain at least Band 2.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 2 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

Matriculation / Foundation (Current Year)

  • Pass the Foundation in Islamic Studies (Universiti Malaya) with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level in one (1) of the following subjects:
  1. Arabic
  2. Higher Arabic
  3. Al-Lughah Al-Arabiah Al-Mu'asirah
  4. Arabic Heritage; and
  • Obtain at least Band 2.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 2 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

OR

  • Pass Matriculation / Foundation with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at the SPM level in one (1) of the following subjects:
  1. Arabic
  2. Higher Arabic
  3. Al-Lughah Al-Arabiah Al-Mu'asirah
  4. Arabic Heritage; and
  • Obtain at least Band 2.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 2 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

Equivalent Qualifications

  • Hold a Diploma in Arabic Language / Islamic Studies recognized by the Malaysian Government and approved by the University Senate with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Achieve at least Grade B in SPM or equivalent in one (1) of the following subjects: 
  1. Arabic Language 
  2. Advanced Arabic
  3. Contemporary Arabic Language 
  4. Arabic Heritage; and
  • Obtain at least Band 2.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 2 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

OR

  • Hold a Diploma in Basic Teaching, Ministry of Education Malaysia, with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; or
  • Pass the Certificate in Basic Teaching, Ministry of Education Malaysia; and
  • Have teaching experience in Arabic language or work experience involving Arabic language (such as language teaching, translation, language planning, terminology management, editing, etc.) for at least three (3) years; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B in SPM or equivalent in one (1) of the following subjects:
  1. Arabic Language 
  2. Advanced Arabic
  3. Contemporary Arabic Language 
  4. Arabic Heritage; and
  • Obtain at least Band 2.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 2 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

OR

  • Pass the Foundation Studies in Private Higher Education Institutions (IPTS) / Open Channel Foundation at UM with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B in SPM or equivalent in one (1) of the following subjects:
  1. Arabic Language 
  2. Advanced Arabic
  3. Contemporary Arabic Language 
  4. Arabic Heritage; and
  • Obtain at least Band 2.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 2 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

OR

  • Pass the GCE A-Level with at least Grade B in Arabic Language and Grade C in any other subject; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at SPM level or equivalent in one (1) of the following subjects:
  1. Arabic Language 
  2. Advanced Arabic
  3. Contemporary Arabic Language 
  4. Arabic Heritage; and
  • Obtain at least Band 2.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 2 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

However, applicants who do not have MUET but have the following results may be considered for confitional admission, provided they meet the MUET requirements within one academic session :

  • Obtain at least Band 4 (Academic) in IELTS; or
  • Obtain at least a score of 41 in IBT (Internet-Based Test) in TOEFL.

OR

  • Pass STPM from previous years with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B in Arabic at the STPM level; and
  • Obtain at least Grade C in any one (1) subject other that the above at the STPM level; and
  • Obtain at least Grade B at SPM level or equivalent in one (1) of the following subjects:
  1. Arabic Language 
  2. Advanced Arabic
  3. Contemporary Arabic Language 
  4. Arabic Heritage; and
  • Obtain at least Band 2.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 2 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

OR

  • Pass STAM in the non-current year with at least the Grade of Jayyid Jiddan; and
  • Achieved at least a Jayyid Jiddan level in the following subjects at STAM : 
  1. Nahu and Sarf
  2. Insya' and Mutala'ah
  3. Balaghah; and
  • Obtained at least a Grade B at the SPM level in one (1) of the following subjects:
  1. Bahasa Arab
  2. Bahasa Arab Tinggi
  3. Al-Lughah Al-Arabiah Al-Mu'asirah
  4. Turath Bahasa Arab; and
  • Obtain at least Band 2.0 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for examinations starting from session 1 of the year 2021 or Band 2 for examinations up to the year 2020, according to the validity period on the application date.

Application for this programme should be submitted online through UPUOnline or Universiti Malaya's Open Channel (SATU). The decision is based on the initial screening requirements by UPU, Universiti Malaya's general entry requirements and specific programme requirements as stated on Study@UM website.

Intake Schedule

Our programme will only have one (1) intake per academic session which is in October.

Bachelor’s Degree Programmes (Malaysian)

1. Applications must be submitted online via UPU website before 9 June 2024.The application is open for applicants with STPM / Matriculation / STAM / Diploma or equivalent.
