The Faculty of Languages and Linguistics is proud to have more than 4,000 alumni . In 2018, 204 students comprising 116 undergraduate students and 88 postgraduate students graduated from the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics.
From 2001 to 2018, 2,452 students had been conferred a Bachelor Degree in Language and Linguistics specializing in one of the languages offered by the faculty (i.e. Arabic language, Chinese language, English language, Italian language, Japanese language, German language, French language, Spanish language, and Tamil language).
Since 1995, 624 students have graduated from the Master of English as a Second Language (MESL) programme. Since 1996, 293 students have graduated from the Master of Linguistics programme. Since 1988, 535 students have graduated from the Master of Modern Languages programme. Recently, the pioneering cohort of our newest postgraduate programme (Master of English Language Studies) comprising 17 students graduated in October 2018.
Graduated with a PhD in Applied Linguistics in 2003. She teaches English to university students in Japan. Her research interests are in genre analysis and vocabulary acquisition. She has published in the Malaysian Journal of ELT Research, the JALT (Japan Association for Language Teaching) CALL Journal and TESOL Journal.
Mohamed Pitchay Gani
Completed his Phd in Linguistics in 2014. He is currently Senior Education officer at the Ministry of Education Singapore. He is currently working on the biography of the father of modern Malay poetry, the late Masuri S.N. and a compilation of short stories and poems for the Singapore SG50 project.
Mohsen Pornour
Graduated with a PhD in Applied Linguistics in 2012. Mohsen Pornour has taught in many Middle Eastern countries. Since graduating from UM, he has been a faculty member at the Language Centre, Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. His research interests include second language reading and teaching pronunciation.
Munif Zarirruddin Fikri bin Nordin
Completed his PhD in Discourse Analysis in 2009. His thesis won the Best PhD Thesis Award at the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin Thesis Awards 2010. He was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford in 2012-2013. Currently, he is an Associate Professor at Universiti Utara Malaysia in Kedah, Malaysia.
Pairote Bennui
Graduated with a PhD in World Englishes in 2013. He is currently working as an Assistant Professor of English Language at Western Languages Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Thaksin University, Songkhla, Thailand.
Yunisrina Qismullah Yusuf
Graduated with a PhD in Phonology in 2013. She is a lecturer in the Study Program of English Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Syiah Kuala in Aceh, Indonesia. She is currently the editor-in-chief of Studies in English Language and Education and the English Education Journal, journals which are managed by University of Syiah Kuala. Her research interests include topics in the field of phonology, semantics, syntax, sociolinguistics, culture, second language acquisition and EFL education.
Alumni Gathering 2018
On 21st April 2018, the faculty organised a high tea, gathering around 100 alumni members at Mengkula Hall. Our alumni members made their pledges to donate in support of the faculty’s effort to renovate Mengkula Hall. Current faculty students from all the departments were also present, performing songs and dances which showcased the cultures of the different languages they study. The faculty would like to sincerely thank our alumni members for supporting this event.
Graduand Ceremony 2018 - (23rd October 2018)
204 students (comprising 16 undergraduates and 88 postgraduates) from the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics had successfully completed their degree and graduated in 2018. They were conferred a degree at the morning session of the convocation ceremony on 23rd October 2018. The faculty organised a ceremony in the evening to celebrate the successes of our graduands. 28 were present at the ceremony. Our current students also performed in conjunction with Bulan Bahasa Kebangsaan 2018.
Maram Adel Aly Mohamedd Elmalah
Maram is our alumna from the Department of English. She graduated with a Bachelor of Language and Linguistics (English Language) degree in 2014. Maram currently resides in her home country, Egypt where she leads and manages her company
Haruna Umar Farouq
Umar Farouq is our alumnus from the Department of Arabic Middle-Eastern Languages who had graduated with a doctorate degree in 2016. Umar Farouq is from Nigeria, and he is currently working as a Senior Lecturer at Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Nigeria. His area of specialization is Stylistics (in Moden Arabic Literary Studies). He is interested in research, teaching, and translation/interpretation.
Nasuha binte Suhaili
Nasuha is our alumna who graduated with a degree of Master of English as a Second Language in 2016. She currently works as a Creative Director at Peaches and Pen, an editorial company which she co-founded with her partner. Nasuha’s past experience includes higher education and entrepreneurial work.
