A message from the Dean

A warm welcome to the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, University of Malaya. We offer programmes that can put you ahead in an era of global communication. As an undergraduate student, you can major in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Tamil. You can also take up another language as part of an elective subject. Our multilingual local and international graduates work in a variety of industries such as corporate communications, media and publication, education and training, and sales and marketing.

The undergraduate programmes at the Faculty develop a range of skills through academic and out-of-class learning experiences. These include community engagement and employability programmes, and compulsory internship placements. Our students are encouraged to participate in student exchange programmes, and there is also the possibility of embarking on a double degree programme for some of our Bachelor’s programmes.

Our postgraduate programmes comprise a doctoral degree by full research, and two Master’s programmes: Master of English Language Studies and Master of Arts (Linguistics). Students from over 16 countries pursue their postgraduate studies with us. We provide our students with academic and research support through the many workshops and seminars organized by the postgraduate office.

Our programmes are taught by a team of dedicated and experienced Malaysian and international academic staff. The diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds of the lecturers, coupled with their teaching and research capabilities, support teaching and learning at the faculty.

In terms of research, we focus on four main niche areas: Applied Linguistics, Discourse Studies, Language Structure and Sociolinguistics. Our research covers the main languages in Malaysia, as well as, indigenous and endangered languages in Malaysia. Our research on language and linguistics also extends to other languages around the world.   As a community of scholars, we strive to create an impact on society. We do this by informing policy decisions on language education, providing training and consultation on language related matters and language education, and supporting heritage language learning, language documentation and language revitalization efforts.

I invite you to be a part of the vibrant and multicultural community at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics. Do contact us for more information about our programmes, research and services.
